Travelling north again, by road from Melbourne to Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen in NE Victoria, between Christmas and New Year. Weather was fiercely hot at times, with fire bans imposed, but grapes, cherries, plums, nashi pears and apples were all ripening beautifully.
Beechworth is an historic gold mining town dating from the 1850s and set amidst scenic granite country; it has become a busy tourist destination. The notorious colonial-era bushranger (outlaw) Ned Kelly frequented the area and spent time in Beechworth's formidable granite-walled prison.
Chiltern is a 19th-century township almost preserved in aspic, whilst Rutherglen forms the nucleus of a wine-producing district beside the Murray River.
