Atacama Desert of northern Chile

Some of the strangest and most dramatic landscapes on the planet are concentrated in this high, dry desert region and in the Andean cordillera immediately to the west, where Chile meets Argentina and Bolivia. Popular excursions from the busy tourist hub of San Pedro de Atacama include the early evening drive to the arid and saline dunes, outcrops and salt encrustations of the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) and the nearby Valle de Muerte (Valley of Death).

August 2016 brought a brief return visit to the Atacama, as gateway to the Salar de Uyuni of Bolivia.
