In 1975 revenue sharing funds became available and Benson transferred title to the city. In the many years since then the building has seen a full rehabilitation and restoration, some of the improvements are; restrooms were made handicapped accessible, new tile floor installed, outside sidewalks were replaced and curb and gutters installed, the parking lot was paved. In 1986 a new heating system was installed for the entire depot and three years later central air was added upstairs and down.
It has been over 15 years since the last passenger train departed from the Depot, but a group of citizens continue to work with the railroad to explore the feasibility of renewed passenger service to the Galena area.
The tracks are still in use by the Canadian National Railroad and the Depot is currently under a 30 year agreement to house the chamber of Commerce and Visitor Information Center. The Visitor Center presently hosts approximately 150,000 visitors per year.
Thanks to the Galena area Visitor Information Center for this depot history.
