The East portal has almost totally disappeared. The Retaining walls on the south side have given way and the approach to the tunnel has been covered over with Fallen trees and debris.
I highly recommend this you tube video about the Winston tunnel, it covers a lot of the history and deaths that happened with the construction and maintenance of the tunnel.

I own the Eastern half of the Winston Tunnel. It has been owned by my family since 1990 or so. I'm not going to ask who gave you permission to be on the property since it was more than 15 years ago. I am curious if you know how many people died while building it. The only recorded death I can find is John Hill. I have also heard of a lady that committed suicide on the Eastern rail bed. I'm not sure if that is true or not, but any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Also the mouth of the tunnel is completely collapsed now, you can no longer see the arch as it is in your picture.

Hard to believe that trains used to come through here. This tunnel was a pure maintenence nightmare for the CGW with the unstable blue shale which it was bored through, and the constant ground water problem. The remote location didn't help either. Cool website, thanks for creating it.
