Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Depot at Geneseo, Illinois

After driving through thunderstorms and dodging hale stones I was rewarded by finding the Geneseo Depot in very good shape. It now serves as three businesses, Sellman Insurance, Myrna’s Grooming Station & Geneseo Memorials & Bronze. There is a foundation to an old Water or Coal tower behind the depot that is dated 1897. The passenger track is intact but buried in the grass. The tracks are currently served by the Iowa Interstate Railroad.

My grandfather, Harold ("H.R.") Kessler, ran this depot until his retirement in the late 1970's. He is celebrating his 100th birthday on November 9th. I remeber spending afternoons with him at the depot as a little girl and being so frightened watching grandpa stand so close to the trains to pass them messages. The red paint is a "modern" enhancement as the depot was was always white.
