Late Stage: This stage is very serious. Your alcoholic spouse has become obsessed with drinking alcohol. Nothing else matters. Often your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife will become malnourished (vitamin B1 deficiency). Liver problems, pancreas problems, anemia and neurological problems may occur. Legal problems are common. Marital stress is a given. At this point, your alcoholic spouse has withdrawn and spends his/her time both drinking and seeking alcohol. A medical professional needs to be involved in "detoxing" your alcoholic spouse or he/she could die going through alcohol withdrawal.

So what are the tell tale signs of having a drinking problem? It is necessary to take initial steps into analysing your own social behaviour pattern. Diagnosing the symptoms of alcoholism may seem to quite simple and well it is, if you take the right steps the same as you would with any other illness.

When a cop pulls you over, especially if he thinks you've been drinking, he's thinking about making an arrest before he even talks to you. It becomes a matter of simply gathering evidence to build a case. He will use whatever information he can against you. He's not going to help you. His job is to arrest you, not build a case of evidence that's favorable to you so that he can let you go.

The other day someone who read my blog, sent me an article about an AA chapter in Washington D.C that was accused of being a cult. The members of this chapter of AA basically encouraged younger female members to have sex with older male members and encouraged members in general to discontinue all ties with anyone who was not a member of this AA chapter. Does that ring the "cult bell" in your head? It certainly does in mine. You can read that article here.

It offers hope and help to people who can't afford to attend a private health clinic. In fact you'll never be asked to put your hand in your pocket for money because it's free. Basically you can attend as many times as you like or as few meeting as you like.

Step 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs. In brief, this step is about passing the message on to others who need it, too. This is a spiritual practice because it intertwines one person to another. One individual's story becomes a part of the tapestry that blankets the recovery movement of alcoholics anonymous. As was mentioned in the introduction, Bill W. and Dr. Bob recognized the importance of sharing their experiences as a means by which to maintain their own recovery. This is a critical step in the AA legacy.

Step Nine. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Step 9 puts recovery into action. This is the opportunity to take a deep breath of the faith the alcoholic has in his or her Higher Power. Trusting in the system and in the process of letting go, the alcoholic faces the ones who have been hurt and offers amends. This is done with care for the other individual and for the self and no one should be put in danger in this endeavor.

The third rule is never give up on actively tackling the problem. Often parents become so frustrated with this problem they just give up trying to rectify it. It is a problem that can escalate into a habit, and you need to put forth every effort possible to get it to stop where it becomes an addiction and you end up with even bigger problems.


Step six does not ask us to do anything to actually get rid of our character defects...it simply asks us to prepare for the event. Making a thorough attempt here is important because doing so will improve our chances of having success in the steps that follow.
