OBJECTIVE: Be the player with the highest score at the end of the game NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 4 players NUMBER OF CARDS: 52 card deck RANK OF CARDS: (low) 2 – Ace (high) TYPE OF GAME: Trick taking AUDIENCE: Adults INTRODUCTION OF KING King is a trick taking contract game that is played all over the world. In spite of its English name, there is no evidence that the game comes from England or any other English speaking country. It is popularly played in some parts of Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and Latin America. Players will complete ten rounds by following specific rules established by contracts. The first portion of the game challenges players to avoid certain tricks and cards, penalizing them with negative points. The last portion of the game rewards players for taking tricks with positive points. THE CARDS & THE DEAL King utilizes a standard 52 card French deck. To determine who will be the first dealer and the score keeper for the game, one player should begin doling out cards one at a time. The player to be given the King of hearts becomes the first dealer and score keeper. Deal passes to the left each round. The first dealer should collect the cards and shuffle them. Deal 13 cards to each player one at a time. THE PLAY During each round, the dealer will announce the contract. Play begins with the player on the left of the dealer. They may play any card that they wish. Following players must follow suit if they can. If they are unable to follow suit, they may play any card they wish unless otherwise stated by the contract rules. Play continues until all of the contracts have been played. THE CONTRACTS Negative Hands NO TRICKS Players are trying to take as few tricks as possible. The dealer may declare a trump suit if they wish. Players lose 20 points from their score for each trick they capture. NO HEARTS Players are trying to avoid capturing tricks with hearts in them. Hearts may not be led unless a player has no other suits available. A player loses 20 points for each heart card captured. NO QUEENS Players are trying to avoid capturing tricks with Queens in them. Players lose 50 points for each Queen. NO MEN Players are trying to avoid capturing tricks with Kings or Jacks in them. Players lose 30 points for each King and Jack they capture. NO KING OF HEARTS Players are trying to avoid capturing the King of hearts. Hearts may not be led unless it is the only suit the player possesses. The player who captures the King of hearts loses 160 points from their score. The King of hearts must be played at the first opportunity. This means if hearts are led, or the player with the King cannot follow suit, they must play the King of hearts. NO LAST Players are trying not to take the last two tricks. The players who capture these tricks lose 90 points from their score for each one. Positive Hands During the Positive hands, each player will have the opportunity to deal and determine trump (or play with no trump if they wish). The dealer shuffles the cards and deals 13 cards to each player. After looking at their hand, the dealer determines which suit will be trump or if the hand will be played with no trumps. Players earn 25 points for each trick they capture during these hands. After each player has been the dealer, the game is over. WINNING The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins. keonhacai |
