A thick collection of curious, unpredictable and often life-affirming actions to the pandemic from some of the most astute directors working today, "Homemade" is pure filmmaking talent in bite-sized pieces that doubles as a vibrant, scattershot collage of the world in 2020.  As a varied put together of design and substance from active filmmakers with special sensibilities, it doubles as an introduction of worldwide cinema and entry point to a lot of its strongest active voices, while providing the opportunity to capture an unique moment in the history of the medium, not to point out humanity itself. Homemade Heather » Inspired Living for Dummies"Homemade," then, both affirms existing filmmaking skill in spite of the worldwide crisis, and hints at its future. Though Netflix's accompanying description motivates audiences to "View These Short Films in Any Order" (and labels the project "Volume 1," though there has actually been no indication yet of more to come), "Homemade" take advantage of a direct experience: It's bookended by two wise declarations on the socioeconomic and cultural effect of the pandemic from Ladj Ly and Ana Lily Amirpour, respectively while whatever in between sorts through the details. It's a lot to take in, but like the 2007 anthology "To Each His Own Cinema" (commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Celebration), the worldwide point of view (and, most likely, some savvy behind-the-scenes curation) suggests that each installation feels unique from the others. In every one, end credits permit the filmmakers to describe the conditions of their quarantine (no one seems to have actually broken the guidelines) and the innovation they used, deepening the personalized nature of the project along with the innovation on display screen.  In "Les Miserables," Buzz's roaming electronic camera recorded the injustices on the streets; here, it captures snippets of lives from windows and roofs, establishing the nature of a project designed to expose the sheer volume of stories percolating in confinement. From there, View Details through funny, moving, and strange installments, few of which feel rushed. |
