Assalamu'alaikum wr. wb. NU Online Editor, I want to ask a question. Some foods and drinks are best enjoyed warm, such as porridge, soup, or hot coffee. Meanwhile, we are prohibited from blowing hot food or drinks. Explanation please? Thank you Wa'alaikumsalam wr. wb. (Servant of Allah/South Jakarta) Answer Assalamu 'alaikum wr. wb. Dear questioner and reader. May Allah give His mercy to all of us. Some people prefer to eat warm food or drinks. While some foods or drinks are indeed more delicious to be consumed warm or even slightly hot. Regarding the question above, we will quote a hadith and a number of views of scholars. The appeal that we avoid blowing food can be found in the following narrations of Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi: ابن اس اللّه ا النبي أن يتنفس الإناء Meaning: "From Ibn Abbas RA, that the Prophet Muhammad forbade exhaling and blowing (food or drink) in vessels," (HR Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi ). From this appeal, the Syafi'iyah clerics then included it in the etiquette of eating food, one of which was not consuming hot food or drinks. A person is recommended to consume food or drink after it has cooled a bit. لَا لَهُ ارًّا Meaning: "He does not eat it hot until it is cold," (Abu Zakariya Al-Ansari, Asnal Mathalib). In our opinion, we really should avoid hot food or drinks because it certainly brings harm to our health, at least it irritates the tongue so that we cannot taste the food or drink to its full potential. The solution, of course, is to wait until the temperature of the food or drink, coffee, is reduced so that it feels a bit warm. If you need a quick time, we can blow it, use a fan, or submerge the container to lower the temperature of the food or drink faster. |
