She quickly turned around to see Bertram, a young fisherman she knew, standing at the shore, waiting for her. The woman was shocked to see that the fisherman was wearing his hair wet and was leaning over the bank to reach an object far away.

Later in the evening, Michael and Bertram, along with Michael's friend, Frank Maggart, went to a small fishing shack to look for a fish. Once inside the shack, they were surprised to see a large carp swimming in the water. The two fishermen realized it was a carp and asked what they could do. A police officer standing next to the fishing shack, whose name was George Ischer, overheard the conversation and asked the men if they had seen a "big fish" earlier that day.
