They say that a dog is man's best friend, and truer words have never been spoken. If you are a dog owner, you know how loyal and loving a dog can be. However, it is not enough just to love your dog. You also know how to care for your dog properly. The following advice will help.

Dogs can't talk, so you must learn their body language. Avoid forcing your dog to interact with others if he doesn't want to. This could cause your dog to harm a person or another dog. Follow your dog's body language.

Never allow your dog to ride in a car unsecured. Sitting on your lap or in the front seat is dangerous both to him and your ability to drive. Always place him in an appropriately sized pet carrier or invest in a pet seat belt that will keep him snug and safe in the middle of the back seat.

Never allow your dog to be alone with small children, no matter how much you trust his temperament. Many little kids have been attacked by family dogs who have otherwise never demonstrated a tendency towards violence. Sleeping dogs may be woken by a toddler and react negatively or some other offense is committed against the animal that sets him off.

Schedule regular veterinary visits. Regular veterinary exams are extremely important for your dog's overall health - as with humans, it is important to catch any health problems early on. The vet will make sure that your dog is up to date on his vaccinations, and check for any other issues such as weight and dental problems or parasites.

When training your puppy or dog, keep the sessions short! Experts say that a dog has the attention span of a small child, sometimes less, and that longer sessions will actually cause him to forget everything you've learned together. Use positive reinforcement and limit your training sessions to no more than 15 minutes.

Check to make sure your dog's collar is adjusted properly by fitting two of your fingers comfortably underneath it and pulling gently. There should be just enough room to do this and no more, otherwise he may be able to wiggle out of it. Always keep it on, except during crate transport, as the collar can get snagged and injure.

Don't forget to trim your dog's nails regularly. Long nails can make him uncomfortable, cause injury to his feet and will ruin your floors. If he makes a "click" sound when he walks on hard wood or linoleum, that's a good indication it's time for a trim. Ask your vet to do it if necessary.

Some breeds have inherent health issues you need to watch for. You might be able to prevent some conditions from developing by taking a little extra care of him from the beginning. Speak with your vet to determine the correct course of action.

If you have a new puppy in the house that suddenly begins chewing things, do not fear. This could be a sign that your puppy is teething. To keep puppy from chewing on your belongings, make sure that you have provided him with plenty of chew toys of his own.

Make sure you provide your dog with affection on a regular basis. Do not focus on just the negatives with your dog. If you focus on the negatives, they will not maximize their potential. Rather, stroke, praise and pet your dog at least three to four times more than you scold or speak sternly to him. This will reinforce that positive behavior brings due rewards, and thus lead to a better behaved pet.

If you have a smaller breed dog, make sure everyone who touches him knows the proper way to hold him. Small dogs can be easily injured by inappropriate handling and many owners find this out the hard way. Gently lift at the belly from under his front legs and secure him with both hands.

If your dog suffers from constipation or diarrhea, you can try feeding the pet canned pumpkin. This is not same as pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin contains fiber which helps with constipation. In addition, it also absorbs water which helps with diarrhea. Don't give the dog much, just a teaspoon or two with the dog's regular meal.

If you pick up a dog from a shelter, make sure that he has been seen by a medical professional. You don't want to bring home a sick dog unless you are aware of it, particularly if you have other dogs at home. Make more information to ask if the dog you have chosen has been around sick dogs in the past few weeks as well.

It is important that you give your dog plenty of exercise. Doing so will promote a healthy lifestyle for your dog and you. This is especially the case if the dog in question is very energetic. If you give your dog sufficient exercise, it is less likely he or she will cause problems inside the home.

Remain firm. When some people own dogs they give them extra treats and allow them to misbehave. If a dog is very cute, it will often be spoiled in this manner. But, remaining firm makes it less likely that accidents will occur. For example, you might not care that your dog begs for food from time to time, but eventually that dog will think it can just jump on the table and start eating whatever is on it.

Just as you would with a baby who has just begun to walk, you should take certain measures to protect your dog from harm in your home. For instance, if you decide to get a dog, get rid of any poisonous plants you have in your home. So many dog injuries and deaths can be prevented by taking a few simple steps.

You should always keep in mind that taking care of a dog is a lot of work. Just like having a baby, a puppy requires constant care. You can do a great job if you are motivated and want to provide the best environment possible for your dog.
