OBJECTIVE OF OCTO: Be the player with the highest score at the end of the game
NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 2 or more players
MATERIALS: Eight 6 sided dice, way to keep score
TYPE OF GAME: Dice game
AUDIENCE: Family, Adults
INTRODUCTION OF OCTO
Created by Reiner Knizia, Octo is a push your luck dice game that challenges players to know when to stop in order to score points. The premise is simple. Players repeatedly roll and remove as many dice as possible until they choose to stop or lady luck turns against them, and they bust.

To play Octo, you will need eight six sided dice and a way to keep score. Play a number of rounds equal to the amount of players. If there are four players, play four rounds. The player with the highest score at the end of the final round is the winner.

Have each player roll a single die to figure out who gets to go first. The player with the highest roll goes first. The player with the lowest roll must keep score. Play will continue clockwise around the table.

THE PLAY
To begin a player’s turn, they should roll all eight dice. After the roll, the player must decide which one number they are going to set aside. They must set aside at least one of the dice. For example, if the player rolled 1-2-2-3-4-5-5-5, they must choose to set aside the 1, one or more 2’s, the 3, the 4, or one or more 5’s. You cannot set aside more than one number. Once a player has chosen which number they wish to set aside, and how many of that number they are going to set aside, they must decide whether to stop their turn or continue rolling the remaining dice.

If a player chooses to continue their turn, they may keep rolling and setting aside dice as long as new numbers are available to set aside. For example, if the player has already set aside 5’s, they can no longer set aside anymore 5’s. If a player rolls and is unable to set aside any dice, their turn is immediately over. They score zero points for the round.

If a player stops their turn, they would earn points equal to the total value of the dice they set aside.

Play like this continues around the table until all of the rounds have been completed.
