Over the course of my forty years of work as an educator and researcher Teachers have demonstrated to me that they're often generous and committed to making a an impact on the lives of their students. Too many teachers aren't prepared to meet the emotional and social demands of today’s classroom. Testing that is high-stakes and students who have mental health issues that are severe could cause them to feel depressed, burned-out or even ready to give up. Training for teachers tends to concentrate primarily on the content and pedagogy of teaching, but it is not focused on the fundamental needs of teaching. Mindfulness, the capacity to be present in the present and not judge others is a powerful tool to help children learn. Mindfulness can also be utilized to decrease conflict and create positive ways of relating to the class, which could result in greater satisfaction at work.

How can mindfulness help with this?
Through training our minds to be conscious of our inner and external experience, as well as mastering the art of managing our emotions.

Mindfulness can help teachers better understand their own emotions
There are times when I realize that while teaching, my brain is too focused on what I have to do and how I can perform it. This makes it difficult to remain present in the moment. I have expectations about what I want to see happen and I get attached to them, instead of taking note of how things actually are.

This could create anxiety and increase my vulnerability to threats. I may imagine a student's disruptive behavior is intentionally designed to interfere with my teaching , but it's normal of a child that needs assistance in regulating his behavior. If I take his behavior as a personal issue, I could get angry and say something that makes matters even worse.

Mindfulness allows us to communicate more effectively with our students
During my first year of teaching , I was unsure of how to get my students to listen to me during my classes, respond to directions, or behave in a manner that was appropriate. I believed that if i did my best to be nice to my students, they'd like me, want to please me, and do what I wanted them to do.

But, I was not right. I was mistaken. My students did not respond or behave like me, and my frustration grew every day to the point that I was frustrated and started to yell at them.

Mindfulness can be a great tool to help us manage students who are struggling
Teachers must deal with children who are disruptive in the classroom. Mindful awareness allows us to pay attention to the behavior of the child that causes the child to be disruptive.

Sometimes , students are a mess due to their environment being suitable for their. For instance, children in kindergarten are unable to sit and listen to adults speak for prolonged time. Children who have experienced trauma in their childhoods are more alert which could result in them losing concentration and make poor choices.

Mindfulness assists us in creating a positive learning environment
Teachers are often convinced they are able to control the actions of their students. This is a myth. This creates struggle for power, and our efforts to control our students' behavior are likely to backfire.

It is better to learn to control yourself and create a space which encourages learning. We are in control of the way we talk as well as how we behave, and how we place our bodies. We can set and establish boundaries and expectations. And, we can regulate the physical space of the classroom to make it conducive to learning.

Mindfulness can help improve our relationships with students
Effective classroom management is built on research that shows the importance of student-teacher relationships. Although we can create excellent management systems that have limits and rules, if students don't trust us and don't trust us, it's an issue.

Mindfulness helps us to slow down when we need to
Sometimes as new teachers we may be extremely concerned with completing the lesson plan and unconsciously start to rush. It's feasible to slow down, stop and think about how we're feeling, what's going on in the classroom, or what students are in need of right now. It also helps to model mindfulness for our students.

Mindfulness can aid us in building community
Students are innately compelled to belong to and contribute to a community. We can foster a sense of community by practicing caring and other social actions, by establishing caring routines, and mindfully listening to our students.

To cultivate an environment of learning We can provide students with opportunities to work together and help one another--for example by having students work in groups in which each student has a specific assignment that contributes to the goal. Collaborative learning offers students the chance to support others and reflect on the needs and experiences of other students, which fosters empathy and perspective-taking.

These things will help teachers be the best and inspire the greatest qualities in their students. Learning is enjoyable for everyone as long as you approach the classroom with calm awareness and the ability to engage in an appropriate manner.
