Adults generally walk between 3 and 4 miles an hour. This means that a mile could be completed in just 15 minutes. Some people will be more or less efficient than this, and walking speed can be affected by age and gender, as well as fitness level.

Can you calculate walking speed?

It is important to know the time the average distance to walk for a mile, if you plan a trip, day trip, or in preparation for a sponsored race or marathon. Your health and fitness level will have an impact on how much time it takes to walk one mile. But, you should be aware of other aspects such as your fitness level, gender, age as well as general health.

The speed at which you walk is based on your age.

We don't mean the amazing phenomenon that it takes to walk two blocks while a toddler within three hours (so many cracks in walls that you can see!)

It may be surprising to find out that twenty-somethings tend to walk faster than their older thirty-something or forty-something peers. It's real. As we approach our fifties and our walking speed decreases and then increases.

That's why, at 2.1mph, it would take an average of 75 years an hour to walk a mile (28 minutes and 34 seconds) A 23-year-old is likely to walk at 3mph, and it will take them just 20 minutes to walk a mile.

The speed at which women walk varies according to gender

All age groups, men walk faster than women. This is because they generally have larger legs. It is possible that they are more likely than others to be late for something.

Walking how long does it take to walk half a mile at a pace

Another factor to consider when determining the distance to walk one mile is whether you're walking in a stroll, walking, or simply walking along the street. If you're enjoying the country air, you will slow down your pace than if fear missing the train.

Here are some figures for various speeds of walking:

Fast: 100-119 steps per minute / 11 minutes per mile

Normal: 80 to 99 steps per minute / 15 minutes per mile

Relaxed 60-79 steps per minute/20 minutes per mile

It is possible to look at the miles chart below for an estimate of how much time it will take to walk a given distance at a normal easy or fast pace.

The final entry of our chart provides us with the answer to the question "How long will the Proclaimers take to travel 500 miles?" At a normal pace of walking, it would take approximately 125 hours to complete the task.
