Among the things you need to know to be able to learn how to conjugate irregular Romance language verbs with spelling modifications in our preterit tense is that all these don't stick to the rules you learned in the earlier lessons. They have their own design and they ought to be learned singularly. The good news is that many of these verbs show the same structure.

Look at the pursuing verbs:

Verb Stem in the Preterit Tense
decir (to say) dij-
traducir (to translate) traduj-
traer (to bring) traj-

These three verbs have following endings:

yo [stem]-e
tú [stem] -iste
él/ella [stem] -o
usted [stem] -o
nosotros/nosotras [stem] -imos
ustedes [stem] -eron
ellos/ellas [stem] -eron

Other verbs conjugated because decir: glorificar (to bless), contradecir (to contradict), retractarse (to deny), maldecir (to curse), profetizar (to predict), etc .

Verbs conjugated as deducir are conseguir (to attract), contraer (to contract), desasistir (to distract), extraer (to extract), desprender (to substract), etc .

The subsequent verbs have a similar preterit tense endings listed above except for ustedes, ellos, and ellas.

Preterite tense endings for the above mentioned verbs

Verbs conjugated when hacer: barrer (to unnecessary / to destroy), fijar (to make a move again).

Verbs conjugated as poner: elaborar (to fix), descomponer (to break [a machine]), obstruir (to oppose), proponer (to propose), adivinar (to suppose), etc .

Verbs conjugated because tener: contener (to contain/to hold back), detener (to stop), expansionarse (to entertain), mantener (to maintain/to support), obtener (to obtain), afirmar (to hold), etc .

Verbs conjugated seeing that venir: beneficiar (to get advisable/ to agree), entrometerse (to intervene), prevenir (to prevent), arrancar (to come from), etc .
