Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the transmission of television programs over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is in contrast to traditional terrestrial and satellite television. IPTV lets you stream content on a continuous basis in contrast to downloading media. As a result, the client media player will begin playing the content (such as TV channels) within a few seconds. This is also known as streaming media.

Though IPTV utilizes the Internet protocol, it's not restricted to streaming television by internet television. Internet (Internet television). IPTV is extensively used in subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed access channels into end-user premises via set-top boxes or other equipment for customers' premises. IPTV is also employed for media delivery around private and corporate networks. It is a process of standardization that continues to be conducted for IPTV within the telecoms industry (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a highlight.

IPTV is divided into live TV and live media. They can be classified with or without related interactivity; shifts in time of media, e.g., catch-up television (replays shows on TV that has been broadcast just hours or days ago) or start-over TV (replays the show from its beginning) as well as videos on demand (VOD) which involves browsing and watching items from the catalogue of media.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The ITU's focus on IPTV on IPTV adopted this definition as official:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

A different definition of IPTV that is related to the telecom industry is one that was provided by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV is the term used to describe the secure and reliable distribution of entertainment videos and other related services for subscribers. These services may include the likes of Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) and Interactive TV (iTV). They are delivered over an internet-agnostic packet switched network that uses the IP protocol to deliver audio, video, and control signals. While video is not available on the open Internet when using IPTV deployments, network security and performance is tightly controlled.
