Salt is arguably one of our world's most significant cooking ingredients. Without it, most dishes would simply taste bland and less than appetizing. But that's not all salt is made out of.

There are numerous types of salt to choose from, including sea salt , table salt and Himalayan salt. The first two are commonly known as rock salt and kosher salt. Sea salt has been processed into a variety of different colors and often undergoes additional processing such as ironing and the addition of color pigments. Table salt varies greatly in its processing methods, from being raw to being processed with various chemicals. And Himalayan salt...is simply naturally occurring salt mined from high mountain peaks where the natural minerals and trace elements are very concentrated, making it very high in magnesium, potassium and other minerals.

Most people think that salt has only trace amounts of the mineral content, but this is definitely not the case. While sodium chloride is by far the most common type of salt used, salt can be found in several forms such as table salt (sodium chloride) and sea salt (salicylate). Salt's mineral content ranges from barely present (if you can find any at all) to extremely abundant (as much as 90% of the mineral content).
