The Azores isn't a widely recognized destination for many Brits - when I told individuals I was on my technique to stop by Terceira, many individuals explained,' Where's that?' Answer: within the Atlantic.

It is easy to write off the Azores: they're a component of Portugal and mainland Portugal and Madeira are easier, quicker and cheaper getting to; the only air carrier to travel by plane one on one coming from the UK, and only during the summertime, is Azores Air, hence you may be required to eliminate off in Lisbon (a beautiful city, so really that is no hardship); as well as, because the destinations are over 1000km coming from the mainland, it takes quite some time to get there.

But they're really worth the effort. Having recently visited Terceira island, here are 3 reasons why you ought to put it with your holiday wish list:

VOLCANOES
Terceira could be the only place on the planet in which you are able to go INSIDE a volcano and also stand within (the currently extinct) magma chamber. At Algar Carvao (part of the Pico Alto, that is an active volcano) you don't need to abseil down and make use of any special equipment - there's nothing much more strenuous than a walk through a lengthy tunnel to get to the interior, then a great deal of simple to regulate steps taking you downwards to the big, round chamber where magma previously bubbled. The walls look like a Jackson Pollock painting in hues of brown with small sparkles of obsidian.

HIKING
You'll notice lots of amazing places in the world to go hiking and Terceira certainly provides a lot of variety. But for me personally, the Misterios Negros actually stood out, and is grounds to visit the island. The trail is from the wild Nature Reserve of Serra de Santa Brbara.

It is a hard hike as the route is very uneven; you clamber above rocks, use logs as stepping stones through the bath, duck under low branches and climb up into the cloud forest.

FOOD
Even in case you have not travelled to a spot for the food, the gastronomic travels can leave you with a fantastic taste of an area, or that underwhelming sensation of just wanting to get home to consume something decent. In Terceira it will be the former; much of the food is developed on the island, so it's full and fresh of flavour, there are local cheeses to test, and in addition make their own wines. And additionally there are the cakes.

BONUS - WHALES & DOLPHINS All these are great reasons to book a holiday to Terceira - but if you want one more reason, then it has to become the whale watching. The Azores are recognized for an abundance of whales all year round, so there's a fairly good chance that you will spot one (or more) when out during a watercraft in the deep h20 beyond the island. A small zodiac is a great way to travel - stable, fast, along with close to the water, thus you will get a terrific view.
