My daughter noticed some brightly colored birds flitting around our apartment and I spotted them and set up my Canon 1D Mk III with the Canon 100-400 lens and a 1.4x Teleconverter for a total of 560mm although the combination "costs" both in aperture and some image IQ. But, they were flitting around in trees across the way from my deck at enough of a distance to make my combo needed and even still ending up with small critters -- the first couple shots after my kit shot show full frames to show also the bright sunlight and shadow I had to deal with. All the rest are nearly 100% crops.
I also had to raise my ISO at the end to keep up with clouds moving in, oh well!
Update:
I have been informed in my photography forum of the identities of the two birds! I thought that they were a male and female pair, but as it turns out they are two different species -- the first and most colorful is a Western Tanager, the second is a Yellow-rumped Warbler -- nice to have people who know stuff!
