Proof of Concept: Food Cargo! June 30 2011

I had plans to get to a location in another part of town, but they fell through. So, I decided to do a "proof of concept"!

I biked to a big grocery store about a mile away to pick up some food items, things I was getting low in. Usually I get fairly large sizes, enough to last me a month or so. But, I've always picked up these types of things with a car! Even in recent weeks, I'll make a run when a family member with a car is around.

But this time I decided to "load up" -- I left my camera at home and picked the nice large packages of cheese and ground beef that I'm in the habit of getting along with a loaf of bread, bought them, filled my backpack, and took off on my bike! I made it back! The bread sadly got a bit scrunched, but...

Back home I figured out the "logistics" compared to taking some hefty camera gear in a backpack:

Cheese: 5 lb
Meat: 3 lb
Bread: 1.5 lb

Total food cargo weight: 9.5 Pounds

Now, in comparison, I looked up the weight of my big/heavy Canon 1D Mk III and my two heaviest lenses, the EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS and the EF 100-400 IS lens:

1D3: 2.54 lb
70-200: 3.24 lb
100-400: 3.1 lb

Total weight of camera and two lenses: 8.88 Pounds

---------------

Now this is way cool -- I made it the mile back on the bike carrying more weight than the 1D3 and the two heavy lenses combined!!! It didn't crush me!!! I lived to tell about it!!!

This may seem a bit silly unless you realize that I'm in the habit of packing a lot of gear into my car for an outing -- two cameras and a bunch of lenses...

And now, pictures! When I got home I put my food items together with the backpack and did some photos -- I laid down on the kitchen floor to get these, which was fortunate because my shutter speed was waay slow even shooting wide open with my 5D Classic and my 24-105, my current "bike around lens"! So here are a pic of the "stuff" and then crops to show you the weight!
