The year 2003 was tumultuous -- my uncle, a well-known California physician, died of cancer in February,and then a month later my Mom, who had undergone open-heart surgery at the same period of time, died as a result of not being able to recover from the surgery.

Such occasions became the scene of family reunions -- and this one for my uncle was the first of several over the next few years.
