Lake Mungo in the far west of New South Wales is a must visit location for many Australian photographers. This remote place is the site of an ancient lake bed and features a spectacular eroded lunette also known as the Walls of China. There are also some striking sand dunes in the area. A sheep station was established in the 1850's. A woolshed constructed of local cypress in 1851 still stands. It was built by chinese labourers who had run out of luck on the Australian gold fields. In this area the oldest known skeleton of human remains in Australia was found in 1974. "Mungo man" is estimated to be 42-68,000 years old and remains a topic of debate between proponents of the competing ‘out of Africa’ and ‘regional-continuity’ theories of human evolution. http://www.walkabout.com.au/locations/NSWLakeMungo.shtml
