September marks a key migratory period for these champions of non-stop, long-distance flight. Some bar-tailed godwits stop over in the Dutch Wadden Sea to rest and feed on worms and crustaceans before continuing south for the winter; however, a smaller number of hardy individuals choose to overwinter on the mudflats and in the estuaries of the Dutch coast.
