We pulled into the Black Sand Basin geyser area around 9am one morning to find an immature
great blue heron fishing beside the Firehole River. There was a point, as it was walking along the
bank, when it put its foot into the runoff from the one of the hot springs. He jumped up just as
I was taking a series of shots. I have a picture from a few seconds earlier one step back, this
shot of him reacting, and then 1 second later where he is standing normally again.
This is the classic example of being in the right place at the right time with your finger pressed
half-way down on the shutter release. My friend Bill, standing next to me with a nearly identical
set-up was taking pictures of the same bird. He missed the shot because he couldn't react quickly
enough--it happend that fast! This pose reminds me of the Karate Kid movie when Daniel is using
Mr. Miyagi's Crane-Style of Karate.
