are the only mines in the world that were in operation for over 1000 years. The ore mines,
now a museum, and the medieval old town of Goslar are on the UNESCO world heritage list
since 1992. The mines influenced the history and development of the town of Goslar that
became a favorite residence for kings and emperors. Ten centuries of mining history
are documented in the Rammelsberg mines, which shut down in 1988,leaving a large
inventory of mining monuments.
