Drum Bank
We came across this ceramic drum bank while cleaning out my folks' closets. I remember it from when I was a child, when we used it to store away the pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that made up our life savings. I had assumed it had been tossed away at some point, never realizing that my parents had kept it all these years. It was one of the few pleasant finds in an otherwise somber task.

All That Remains
I spent the weekend in NJ helping my sisters clean out my parents' house to get it ready for sale. We spent well over 5 emotional hours sorting through many years' worth of credit card bills, bank statements, and medical records, reliving my dear parents' decline and demise in the process. The shredded results were almost as big as the chair in which my mother spent so much time during her final years.

Protecting the Plants
I was in Orlando last weekend to cheer on the WDW Marathoners. My trip was unfortunately timed with some record cold weather that was hitting the Southeast. They do what they can to protect the tropical vegetation from frost, but it is often a very undignified look.

Christmas Candle
I think it's time to resurrect my Photo-a-Week project. I bought myself Lightroom for Christmas, and this gallery will be a great excuse to start learning to use it. Happy New Year, everyone!

Bronze Plaque
I finally got to see the newly-installed plaque on my Mom's grave. It has been 6 months already, but seeing her name there etched in cold metal is a harsh reminder.

Flower Reflection
I've been letting this photo-a-week gallery slide because 2009 has been a pretty crappy year so far. But I think I'm ready to resurrect this. I'm starting off with this small tribute to a very special person that I took back in May.

Meet Diablo!
My kind-hearted sister and her family spotted a pair of feral kittens whose mother had abandoned them near her house, and decided to take them in. It took a few days, but they seem to have adjusted to indoor life. Diablo is definitely the more serious of the two, and he had no idea what to make of my camera.

This is why I love the Fall!
I took the day off from work - I've got some vacation time to use up, plus I really needed the break. I picked a beautiful day to stay home, sunny and in the 60's. I decided to take a walk at Locust Grove (home of Samuel F.B. Morse), which is very near my apartment. Even though it is technically past peak colors, and we had some torrential rains last weekend that should have knocked the leaves off the trees, the Hudson Valley is still looking amazing.

Vines and Berries
Today was our last chance to do any sort of leaf peeping, since the trees in the Mid-Hudson Valley are nearing their peak colors. Our wanderings took us down to Garrison (although $15/person to wander around Boscobel was a bit too much for our tastes), Cold Spring (where we enjoyed walking up and down the main street and exploring the various shops), and Beacon (where we wandered around the waterfront until the next train arrived). I spotted this vine growing on the side of a brick building in Cold Spring, and liked the variety of leaf colors as well as the contrasting berries.

Twin Tissue Boxes
We wandered through a street fair in Chelsea on the way to the Apple store (to pick up my new iPhone!). Lots of interesting items for sale, but nothing that I really wanted to own.

A Touch of Fall
I haven't had much chance to use a camera over the last week, so I took one with me to a department picnic on Wednesday. I was looking for signs that my favorite time of the year was on its way. There certainly were a few signs around, with touches of Fall color here and there among the green. We still have a way to go before the colors peak; hopefully when that happens, I'll have time to capture them photographically!

Rainy Rogue
Friday turned out to be pretty miserable, weather-wise. And the rest of the weekend is looking just as miserable. A weather system or two will be dumping lots of rain on us over the next few days. I guess this means that I'll finally have time to do some of the cleaning I've been putting off for months!
