Bruce Peninsula 2010

The Nelsons (Tom, Jackie, Johanna and Christina) took a trip to the Bruce Peninsula (Lake Huron, Ontario) on Memorial Day weekend accompanied by our good friend Eric Lamont. We encountered an incredible array of orchid species - 14 total - and the scenery was fantastic! A stop at New York State's Bergen Swamp Preserve on the way up found the Cypripedium candidum past-bloom by about two weeks. But we were rewarded with some beautiful yellow lady's-slippers and Spiranthes lucida in full bloom. The locals on the Bruce told us that the yellow lady's-slippers along Hwy 6 are the most bountiful display they have ever seen. Thousands lined the highway in an unforgettable display. We visited a population of at least 500 ram's-head lady's-slippers growing thickly in a pine forest. A nice population of Platanthera hookeri was located near Sauble Beach. But the highpoint was our visit to Flowerpot Island, part of Bruce Peninsula Fathom Five Nat'l Park, where we saw an amazing colony of Calypso bulbosa var. americana in flower. An unforgettable experience!!! Lots of Corallorhiza striata and a few C. trifida as well as Goodyera oblongifolia and Piperia unalascensis (the latter two not in bloom) were growing near the calypso. All photos were taken on the Bruce unless otherwise labeled. My oldest daughter, Johanna, has become an excellent photographer; I especially like her close-up work. I've included some of her and Jackie's images - it's good to have backup! Enjoy.
