Public Executions

Vietnam

... although the practice was halted in the Spring of 1966, this photo depicts the firing squad execution center located near the Central Market. It sat adjacent to a large traffic circle on the main street through Saigon (Tran Hung Dao, as I recall). People were executed for any number of crimes and their bodies were left lashed to the posts for a day or so as a reminder and warning to others. It was dismantled in the summer of 1966.

Here's a translation from the post below from Col Steve. He is responding to another post several lines down from Thang Nguyen.
Thang Nguyen, if you believe this is where patriots are executed, you would have supported the communist regime. If it works for you, then so be it. However, the man discussed here is not a patriot, he is a criminal hoarder.

I was stationed in Saigon in 1966 when this execution took place . Went thru that area many times. This execution was very controversial and my recollection is that it occurred early one morning just after dsylight.

In 1966 Chinese businessman was executed on this site for hoarding. Did not please the Chinese population at all.

I saw an execution in Saigon in 1968 at this very sight. I sat on the top of our deuce and a half to get a good view. I even took photos. I was in the 300 MP company on the Saigon docks.

FYI Thang Nguyen - 16-Jul-2008 13:06
Đây nơi thi hành án tử hình những người yêu nước.
Says: "this is the place where they executed people who loved their country"
Obviously a north supporter

I find it interesting & cowardly that Thang Nguyen does not post the comment in english

Tom, are you sure that "the bodies were left lashed to the post for a day or so..." ?
I remember that this place is called "Pha'p tru'o'`ng ca't". It was created during the time of Nguyen Cao Ky administration. I knew of its use for only a handful of times ( less than five) for prominent politico-economic cases. The well known case was that of Ta. Vinh, a chinese-vietnamese who illegally hoarded rice in large scale to manipulate the market. This may not be a good thing, however it helped Ky to achieve certain stability to the socio-politico environment at the time.

Looks like downtown Bagdad without the foliage. Will we ever learn?

Unfortunately, there was no warm and fuzzy side to the Vietnam War. I know there was a lot of controversy about the executions but people didn't realize that the violence just kept escalating on different levels. This is something that most of us never saw. Thank you for sharing it. Voted.

A grim reminder of how lucky we are to live in our time and place. A superb documentary capture. (Miriam)

This is the impression I have of VN growing up in the states.
I think this is why Vietnamese are scare to go back to VN in the 80s and even 90s.
