Rex Hotel (Saigon City Central)

Vietnam

... in the foreground is an English language billboard which makes for interesting reading retrospective to history ... and the building in the background is the Rex Hotel. The Rex was taken over by the US Army and turned into quarters for officers (two to a room in most cases). The open air balcony on top of the building was the Officer's Club. This hotel has now (2007) been restored and is still in use ... and still uses the name Rex Hotel.

This is where Bob Hope, Kissinger et al hung out on their trips to Nam Big tourist stop with open bar club on top floor. Was was not so bad for many folks....."round eyes" mostly!

The bill board says:

LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT OF MUTUAL ASSISTANCE OF THE PEOPLES AND GOVERNMENTS OF THE FREE WORLD NATIONS.

MUTUAL AID MEANS MUTUAL SECURITY

THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE ASSISTANCE OF FRIENDLY COUNTRIES.

EVERY MEASURE OF ASSISTANCE IS A STEP TOWARDS THE TRIUMPH OF FREEDOM OVER SLAVERY.

I believe the government of South Viet Nam put up this bill board to show our gratitude towards the free world, represented by their flags on the board, in assisting us fighting against the communist North Viet Nam.

The history still have many questions remained to be answered. ..
I strongly agree with John McCain's saying: "THE WRONG GUY WON THE WAR".

Très intéressant, j'ai passé quelques jours dans cet hôtel lors de mon deuxième voyage au Vietnam.
