An Ocean Cruise ...

Vietnam

... our home for the next 27 days was the USNS Upshur, A World War II vintage troop ship that had no stabilizer and, I'm positive, would rock and roll in drydock. We re-named her the USNS Upchuck. The trip was broken up by 4-hour stops in Honolulu, Yokohama, and Okinawa. Other than that, nothing but ocean. I recall that we ran out of fresh water about 4-days away from Vietnam and you could shower with salt water (not recommended) or not bathe at all. Most elected to do the latter and I'm certain we weren't able to sneak up on anyone.

Took the same transport to RVN leaving Long Beach, Ca 5 Dec 1967, One stop in Okinawa for supplies for several hours. Arrived RVN, QuiNhon Habor late 23 Dec 1967. Anchored off shore for the night. Watched machine gun fire in the hills through the night. Concussion grenades were employed around the hull also through the night to keep the sappers away. Off loaded 24 Dec 1967, issued ammo, convoyed to AnKhe, base camp. Merry Christmas and welcome to Vietnam. 5/22 Artillery 175-8".

What a great commentary. You remember stuff no one else probably would.
