This statue of Aw Boon Haw at the entrance to Tiger Balm Gardens stands overlooking some abject poverty. Aw Boon Haw, at the cost of more than HK $16,000,000 built the Gardens in the 1930's. They're gone now, as I'm sure the slums are as well.

My parents, younger brother and I lived in Kowloon, 1966-67, on Argyle Street. I was 7 - and +. We lived on the top floor of the "Carlton Mansion" building, at the back, so our balcony overlooked an agricultural village immediately below. One night the dwellings below, surrounding a field (I think), caught fire. It was horrible. I remember people screaming and running, trying to put the fires out. I don't recall what the outcome was, but that made a very lasting impact on me, which it certainly must have done for the people who lived in that village. The disparity wasn't lost on me.

this place is spooky - it's one of the bits that i dont regret the bulldozer shredding into. did you know that there was a tomb here with thousands of human bones on semi-display? the tiger balm lotion, however, is another story!
