I stayed there in September 1967 on a trip to pick up school uniforms for Thai students in Nakhon Phanom. I think that it was 55 HK dollars a day. I was in the US Air Force and arrive in a UC-123..had to change to civilian clothes before leaving the aircraft.
Just after leaving the terminal a bomb was detonated. There were some riotes and a communist Chinese holiday. Kowloon and Hong Kong were beautiful as were the owner and her niece of the Blue Angel. The nice and I went to a great disco club under a hotel and danced to a Chinese Beatles cover group that looked and sounded like the Beatles..the base player was even left handed base player. It's 3am and the brain is more than half asleep..great memories.

Being typical Aussie infantry soldiers on R&R leave in Hong Kong we got up to mischief including paying rickshaw drivers to race each other on Hong Kong Island & betting on the winner. Also some very heavy sessions with US servicemen who were in port & who were crew on the USS Surfbird. Not to forget the cheap “Seiko” watches with bamboo springs the local street conman tried to sell us. It was a welcomed reprieve from the pressure of service in Vietnam with 7RAR & later 1RAR in 1967….. Kevin

I went to the bar in the basement of the hotel many times during the late 60s and met many American sailors taking a break from the Vietnam war. There was a girl’s band that played pretty good music. One night a sailor sat next to me told me he really liked the lead singer, a very pretty girl and wanted to marry her, I told him to go ahead to ask and he did, of course she said no and he was so disappointed and told me he was from Mississippi and his family owned a big farm, it was an interesting conversation, I hope he survived the war.

I, with 3 fellow Australian Army infantry soldiers stayed at the President Hotel in 1967 while on R&R leave from service in South Vietnam. It was a different world from hence we recently came & from our Australian homes. The people at that time were wonderful & engaging.

I stayed at the President Hotel in HK while on R&R in Feb ‘67’. Looking at google and searching he web, I thought the Holiday Inn Golden Mile was the old President, remodeled of course. On this site it appears the hotel was demolished in 2007. Oh Well

Oh so many memories for me in these photos.. I arrived in Hong Kong in June 1966, having married in Mornington, Vic. Aust in April. My husband was with the Hong Kong Govt. and we had 3 weeks in this Hotel before getting our Apartment at Silverstrand Apartments, Clearwater Bay Road. Kowloon. NT.. We were there for a couple of years, then moved to Tseng Lan Shui Clear Water Bay Apartments.. then from there into Caldecott Rd. Apartment B7. In 1975 I returned to Australia.. My Hubby died in 1988. As yet, I haven't been back to Hong Kong, but I still might make a return trip one day,.. Thanks for sharing.. Ann Copelin
I have a lot of photos of Hong Kong taken in the 60's/70's. which I will add on here soon..

I recall the Firecracker Bar, it was a great place in 1966 and 67. I was a U.S.Marine from Vietnam for R&R, I needed rest from Kowloon when I returned.

I have a woman's evening "wool" coat made by MONET Custom Tailors on the neck tag it says "Exclusively hand made for you in British Crown Colony of Hong Kong, G-174 President Hotel Arcade PO Box 5197 Kowloon Hong Kong. The coat is very well made but the detail on the inside of the lapels is beautiful intricate stitchery. The pocket inside the coat has small fabric points. Inside the pocket their is another tag from MONET, with name, order no. and date sewn in. The coat is A line with a peter pan collar, with big covered, detailed buttons It is Red. Has anyone seen something like this?
