A Long Forgotten Soldier ...

... an old photo found in my father-in-law's files taken somewhere in Russia in 1942. This is obviously a temporary military gravesite and the fallen German soldier was 22-yr old Karl Heinz Lehnert. The inscription shows his date of birth as 6/6/1920 and his date of death as 12/9/1942.

... My father-in-law was a Private in the German Army and lost a leg in a battle near Riga, Poland. After the war, he became a noted architect and spent much of his remaining years restoring old churches throughout southern Germany.

... Even though I enjoyed a 22-yr military career in the US Army, as I creep (rush?) into old age, I'm beginning to see the futility of it all. So many young men then and now ... perhaps wasted.

*I wonder if the pine at the head of the grave is tall and strong now...

As long as this photo remains available this soldier will not be forgotten.

A strong image.I remember that in past ,perhaps again, during the school holidays the young Germans came in France to restore, wash, the tombs of German Cemeteries in France.Never the opposite for the French Cemeteries outside the France,I think...The American Cemeteries is a Honor to US ,with Guards,People for the Maintenance,a so white ,immaculate....
A very good image

Very sad indeed...I asked myself why so many died in Vietnam after seeing as an adult. So sad.

Sad. WW2 has a strong hold on our psyches. Five years after this picture was taken, I entered the world.

Strong and emotive shot! As always, we question it all when we see images like this.
