This is a Hallicrafters S-38C general coverage short wave receiver.

The S-38 series was a low end, entry level, series of inexpensive short wave radios that were produced over a number of years, from about 1946 to about 1961. These radios are called "transformerless" and had some unique, and sometimes dangerous, characteristics.

This model, the S-38C, was made from 1953 to 1955 and sold for about $49.50 new.
