D60 vs 20D Sharpness Comparison

There have been some comments on various forums that the 20D is not as sharp as the 10D or the D60 was. I don’t have a 10D, but I do have a D60. I grabbed three lenses and decided to shoot them under identical conditions on the D60 and the 20D. My 20D is still only a week old, so I had planned to do something like this anyway to decide if I needed to exchange it.

The target was a power pole about 125 feet away. The focus point was the L and T in the word VOLTAGE. The shots were taken tripod mounted and using a remote release. The three lenses were the Canon 70-200 f4 L, the Canon 100-300 f5.6 L, and the Canon 100-400 L IS. All three lenses were set to 200mm focal length. All exposures used the same aperture, f8.0, this way no one lens was wide open. Both cameras were set for One Shot focus and center point only. ISO 100 was selected, JPG mode was used, and all in camera settings were set to 0. These crops are 100% and 300 x 150 pixels.

This was NOT done to check absolute sharpness, but only to compare the D60 and the 20D under as close to the same conditions as possible. I also shot all the shots using RAW, and those would be a better representation of absolute sharpness, but I have not bothered to upload those images here.
