I love dianthus - I love the clovelike fragrance and especially the grey-green foliage and the teeny jewel-like flowers. Those are "Bluet" batchelor's buttons behind the dianthus. A French woman, watering her Bluets, once told me that they represented the blue in the Tricoleur, where the red was the Coquelocot red poppy. I forget what she said was the flower for the white. Her point was that they were all humble wayside flowers.
