June 20th - Gone...

...but not forgotten.

I have a lot of fond memories of this place.
It was called Far East Cafe and has been a chinese restaurant since way back before WWII.
I started coming here when I was in high school, bringing my dates and my friends. I had many a pleasant meal here.
I remember the almond duck they served, no one did it better and I miss it to this day. And the pan-fried noodles! Delish...

I drive by this place everyday on my way to work. A couple years ago there was a kitchen fire and they closed down.
Yesterday they took the landmark red-pagoda-and-neon sign down off the building. We lose another quintessential Bakersfield landmark.
Sad, yes, but at least it's going to the local museum to be preserved. Now there's a new cafe moving in to the old space.

My alternate for today and a previous shot of the old sign, now gone.... :

Ouch! It looks naked. At least it is going to a museum ... but ... they should have preserved it on the spot.
