Pointe du Hoc

This place is still considered an official war grave...
...as there are bodies, both German and American, which lie undiscovered under the ruins. Having believed that a powerful coast artillery battery, capable of firing on both Utah and Omaha beaches many kilometers away was installed here, allied intelligence decided to neutralize it before the Allied landings. As the surviving rangers started to climb vertically, the Germans dropped grenades over the cliff's edge and cut the ropes of the allied troops. A few men made it over the top while allied destroyer ships bombarded the German bunkers, and they fought their way from one bomb crater to the next, bunker to bunker. But the Germans had already moved their huge coastal guns further inland...
Walking up and down these bomb craters, 65 years after these events, was an experience beyond words for me.
