Great tit

Llanelli, Wales

Parus major
The largest UK tit - green and yellow with a striking glossy black head with white cheeks and a distinctive two-syllable song. It is a woodland bird which has readily adapted to man-made habitats to become a familiar garden visitor. It can be quite aggressive at a birdtable, fighting off smaller tits. In winter it joins with blue tits and others to form roaming flocks which scour gardens and countryside for food.

We have great fits nesting in our bird box. The box is not high up but protected by grape vine.

Just minding my Buisness eating my breakfast when, coming from the snugg was a knocking, I thought what the hell is that as we are gated off so no one can knock the door or window. To my amazement thus cheeky fellow what knocking the window, and was not bothered by my presence. And continued to tap away on our window, what a lovely way to start the day. Leila Telford, Horton.

I live in the centre of London in a residential area. Every night from 11pm exactly, until around 1.30am, there are several birds singing continually. I have seen one during the day, and it is possibly a great tit. Is it usual for them to sing at night??
