The Chipude Fortress is a table-top mountain made of beautiful red basalt, visible from almost everywhere, and therefore it is by itself a good lookout platform.
Take a close look at its sides and you’ll see an almost vertical wall that hosts many native flowers such as the knapweed and the everlasting flowers.

However, there is no reason to be scared of this impressive mountain, if you wish, you could make it to the top.
There is a narrow path between the rocks from where you can reach up to 1240 metres of altitude. Imagine the views you will find when you get there.

La fortaleza de Chipude was a transitory place for farmers as well as a refuge for the former inhabitants who, thanks to the difficult access, used this place to hide themselves against any approaching danger.
Besides this, some people consider it a sacred place in ancient times, associated with the mythical causes, myths, and legends around La Gomera.

La Fortaleza de Chipude is an attractive geological formation as a result of its origin and morphology.
In addition, remarkable archaeological sites have been found on the top. For example, in 1874 Juan Bethencourt Alfonso, studied rocks structures to finally conclude that the fortress is a "sacred mountain".

Nowadays, this place is part of the beautiful natural landscapes of La Gomera, and it is included in the Protected Landscape of Orone as a protected area. Also, it is part of the Natura 2000 network.
All this makes La Fortaleza de Chipude a fantastic place to go hiking in La Gomera.
