The Guatemalan Civil War officially took place between 1960 and 1996, however, its origins can be traced back to 1954 when a CIA-supported military operation overthrew the democratically elected president Jacobo Arbenz. In the northwestern highlands, all of the men were rounded up and killed by the Guatemalan army. The women were raped by the soldiers. The babies resulting from the rapes were called "Gifts from God" by the widows of Ixtahuacan.
