Endangered Reefsharks for Sale

I covered Siargao Island for BusinessWorld’s MobileMedia Project Environment (www.mobilemediaph.com) last June. Even before we took the boat to Siargao from Surigao, we were already surprised at the sight of endangered species (taklubo, or giant clam) being sold at the Surigao City market. Then in Gen. Luna town in Siargao, we found these baby reefsharks at a talipapa (small market). The next day, we saw whaleshark meat being dried near the beach of Isla Dacu. I wrote an article titled “Endangered appetite” after that experience. It was late in the afternoon (5:36pm) and there was no artificial lighting in the talipapa, but I was surprised at the digicam’s performance even in low lighting conditions. The digicam automatically increased film speed to 200. Had I used my film-based Canon SLR, the film speed would remain at ISO 100 and I may have needed a tripod.
