Oakland Cemetery

Dedicated on Dec. 8, 1892, the 60 acres Oakland Cemetery is one of the oldest and most historic graveyards in Dallas. Kiest, Belo, Caruth, Ervay, Akard, Grauwyler, and Zang are just a few of the names found here of those who made Dallas what it is today. And then of course there is the grave of Annie Lawther, said to be the ghost still roaming the shores of White Rock Lake. Oakland Cemetery is located on Malcolm X Blvd in East Dallas.

After another visit to the cemetery just yesterday, you would be shocked at the lack of care. Some of the monuments you have captured so beautifully are almost completely covered in vines and brush growth. The"Woodsman of the World" one has a vine growing up and around his neck and face. It looks like the woods are winning this one! My husband and I also love taking pictures here while visiting my great grandfather's grave. In future visits we plan on bringing a hedge trimmer and weed eater. I saw some other families doing this and it appears to be the only way this cemetery may survive. The city of Dallas certainly has no interest in it any more.

Just came across this by accident, my father is buried here. I just wish they would take better care of all the stones. Thank you for your fine work.
