Jacob Pike

# 26 'things about me'

I have lived on North Haven island in Penobscot Bay all my life.
And couldn't imagine not being close to the sea.

The wooden sardine carrier "Jacob Pike" was built for Moses Bernard Pike (1897-1989) of Lubec, owner of Holmes Packing Company, Eastport, Maine. He named it for his father, Jacob Clark Pike (1854-1928), a one-time sea captain who became a major sardine businessman in Lubec. The 72-foot ship with 17-foot beam could carry over 60 tons of refrigerated herring, leaving one foot of freeboard but contributing to stability in rough seas. Built in 1948 by Newbert and Wallace in Thomaston, she served until Holmes went out of business in 1997. Widely respected for her efficiency and fine lines, she now is owned by J&J Lobster Co. Carrying bait and lobster to and from the islands in Penobscot Bay.

I love being near the sea too, but I have to drive for 45 minutes to get there. Beautiful autumn light on this lobster boat. V

I know what you mean - I too could never live too far away from the sea.

Great evening light, I suppose, especially on the rocks.

Beautiful golden light on this lovely seascape. Love the way it illuminates the boat, the rocks and the flag. V.

How fortunate to enjoy island life. I visited a sardine factory in Maine years ago and was fascinated with the process. Beautiful light in this shot.
