Long-tailed Skipper

Long-tailed Skipper, a rarity in the north, a spread-winged skipper butterfly found throughout tropical and subtropical South America, south to Argentina and north into the southern part of the United States of America. It cannot live in areas with prolonged frost.

I reported my sighting on the Mainebirding list serve and got this reply:

Hi Terry,

Nice find and nice photos! I'm wirting as one of the coordinators of the Maine Butterfly Survey http://mbs.umf.maine.edu/). We would love to have copies of your photographs for our database as confirmation of your sighting. Your specimen is only the third ever recorded for the state of Maine.

Thanks!

Wow, this is simply amazing. Congratulations on your find. A true rarity. I wonder if it flew that far north to Maine because of the hot summer we've had, or was blown off course by strong winds? It is an amazing skipper. Never seen one before, and it looks very much like a swallowtail. I wonder how big it is? VVV
