Le géant Druon Antigone exigeait un droit de passage sur l'Escaut et tranchait
la main des mauvais payeurs. Le soldat romain Brabo tua le géant, lui trancha
la main et la jeta dans le fleuve. Suivant cette explication le nom Antwerpen
(néerlandais d'Anvers) viendrait de "hand" = (main et "werpen" = jeter. En
réalité le nom vient probablement de "Aanwerp" (A quai ? Accosté ? Etc).
To cross the Scheldt river a toll had to be paid to Druon Antigone, the giant.
Those unable to pay had their hand cut off. Brabo, a Roman soldier, slew
the giant and cut off his hand. According to legend the Dutch name of Antwerp
is derived from this legend: Ant = hand, werpen = to throw. In reality it
most probably comes from "Aanwerp" (At the wharf ?).
