Bridge_star_trail.jpg

A second attempt at capturing star trails. This one is a little better but I feel that I am still climbing the learning curve.

I love the subtle tones in this image as much as
the subject matter.
Keep up the good work.

A very nice image of these star trails...
I have made a few attempts at this type of photography, but have had very little luck...

I think that the old bridge makes an interesting foreground subject. You made a great photo for a second attempt. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the advice Jim. I had a bit of a chuckle though as there in no place in Nova Scotia where you can get 100 miles from urban lights.

The learning part can be quite rewarding, Steve! :) For best results get as far away from city lights as possible, like up to 100-200 miles. The darkest part of the sky will looking north and east. Use a wide angle lens to get as much of the sky as possible, and shoot away! I typically will shoot f/2.8 at iso 2500 for 25 seconds as a starting place. I like to include some sort of interesting foreground subject matter and either light paint it, or position myself so its juxtaposed against the night sky. This one is probably the best one I've captured yet using this technique:http://www.pbase.com/jimstiles/image/152250160.

Have Fun!
