San Antonio Missions, Unesco Heritage Trail
(Dec. 2017, Dec. 2018) | ||
|
We explored the Alamo locally in San Antonio and we followed the recommendation of the official
Tourist Center to use a Day Pass on a Bus for approx. mere $2 to visit 3 outlying missions without driving.
It worked out great. If you like a Glass of Wine for lunch, take that option, do not drive!
Compared to the California Missions the history of Missions in Tejaco is not so simple to describe. Large distances, raid sorties, foremost by Apache and Comanche, as well as French military incursions from Louisiana forced some Missions to be relocated or abandoned. There was no a towering figure comparable to Junipero Serra in Alta California. The most important Franciscan friar of the pioneer era is probably Antonio Margil de Jesús. (Any corrections to these facts are most welcomed.) |

One more Mission to visit: Mission San Francisco de Estrada. What I failed to realize because it was not clearly indicated, is the fact that from Mission San Juan mere 20min on foot in the scenic River Path led to the final Mission of the Trail, the Mission San Francisco de Estrada. Next time!
