At the time of my visit I was not aware of the adventurous journey which this Altar made
to find its place in this Mission. The altar is from Ezcaray, Spain (Basque, south of
Bilbao). It was made in year 1687. It was bought by a wealthy collector in year 1925,
and lingered for decades in a storage in several hundreds of separate pieces.
The church was rebuilt following the total collapse in 1971 Sylmar Earthquake, and was dedicated
1974. However, it lacked any altar, and so the Ezcaray Altar was selected as a perfect fit. The
altar was rebuilt, augmented by the effigy of Fernando III, and installed 1991 in this church.
