Full Solar Eclipse, Del Rio, Texas
(Seen Apr. 8, 2024) We came to Texas 2024 to photograph the Total Solar Eclipse. Few years earlier I was in Oregon for the earlier eclipse, but I was not prepared for the extend of impact caused by the flood of visitors, the road blocks(!), empty stores, renting small chunks of lawns 'with a chair' to visitors... Crazy. So I stayed to the south a bit, and watched only a partial eclipse in Medford, OR. A partial eclipse is really not a substitute for the real thing. I also realized that my equipment was not satisfactory. Lens was not long enough (600mm) and I had problems following the sun position.
This time I was better prepared. Not high on budget, but competent. The equipment: Switch the camera to Manual Exposure and Manual Focus, do not hope for Auto-Focus to perform! We had two location to chose from: Lake Hills, almost in the middle of the trajectory, over 4min of darkness, and Del Rio, a bit off center, approx. 3min of darkness. We were lucky in Del Rio: In Lake Hills cloud cover obscured the entire spectacle. These images cover a time span of approx. 1 hour. |
